Most Indians working near windows receive meaningful daily UVA exposure without realising it. Here is what window glass actually blocks — and what it does not.
The Truth
Glass stops 97 to 99 percent of UVB rays. But it only blocks 25 to 38 percent of UVA. The remaining 60 to 75 percent of UVA passes through completely. No sunburn warning. Silent cumulative skin damage.
Why It Matters
UVA triggers melanocyte activation — the cause of tanning, dark spots, melasma and uneven skin tone. These are the primary sun-related concerns for Indian skin. They build up invisibly over months.
How Much Risk
Within 1 metre of a south or west-facing window during 10am to 3pm: significant UVA. Beyond 2 metres from a north-facing window: minimal risk. Check your workspace before deciding whether to apply sunscreen.
The Signal
If you feel warmth from a window, direct sunlight is reaching you — which means significant UVA. If the window-side of your face or arm is a noticeably different shade, window UV has already been affecting your skin.
What to Use
The Derma Co Hyaluronic Aqua Gel SPF 50 PA++++ (Rs.239), Minimalist Hydrating Sunscreen (Rs.249) and Foxtale Glow Sunscreen with Vitamin C (Rs.330) are all lightweight enough for comfortable all-day indoor wear.
Reapplication
Unlike outdoor use, you do not need to reapply indoors unless you go outside. One correct-dose application of SPF 50 PA++++ protects through an entire indoor workday.
