Brightening

Fade dark spots, PIH and uneven skin tone, the most common concerns for Indian skin.

Niacinamide

Brightening

Also known as: Vitamin B3, Nicotinamide

What it is
A water-soluble form of Vitamin B3 that works on multiple skin concerns at once. Regulates oil production, reduces melanin transfer to skin cells, and strengthens the skin barrier.
What it does
Reduces enlarged pores, controls oil and shine, fades dark spots and PIH, strengthens the skin barrier, reduces redness and inflammation.
Best for
Oily, combination and acne-prone Indian skin. Extremely effective on post-breakout dark marks, the most common Indian skin concern.
Watch out
No major contraindications at 5–10%. Very high concentrations (20%+) can cause flushing in sensitive people. The niacinamide-Vitamin C conflict is outdated, modern formulas layer fine.
Indian products
Minimalist Niacinamide 10% (₹299), The Derma Co 10% Niacinamide Serum (₹399), Plum 10% Niacinamide Face Serum (₹449). Read: How to know your real skin type →
Myth busted Niacinamide and Vitamin C cannot be used together. This advice comes from a 1960s study using very high concentrations in lab conditions. Modern concentrations (5–15%) used together cause no meaningful reaction.

Vitamin C

Brightening

Also known as: L-Ascorbic Acid, Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, Ascorbyl Glucoside, Ascorbic Acid

What it is
The most studied brightening active in skincare. L-Ascorbic Acid is the most potent form but oxidises easily in India's heat. Ethyl Ascorbic Acid and Ascorbyl Glucoside are more stable derivatives.
What it does
Inhibits melanin production at source, fades existing dark spots and sun damage, protects against UV-induced free radical damage, boosts collagen production.
Best for
All Indian skin tones dealing with sun damage, uneven tone, PIH or melasma. Store away from heat and sunlight.
Watch out
L-Ascorbic Acid degrades fast in Indian summer heat. Use in the morning. Always follow with SPF, Vitamin C is most effective when combined with sun protection.
Indian products
Minimalist Vitamin C 10% (₹345), The Derma Co 10% Vitamin C Face Serum (₹549), Foxtale Vitamin C Serum (₹699)
Myth busted Darker Indian skin does not need Vitamin C because melanin protects it. Melanin protects against sunburn, not UV-triggered pigmentation. PIH and sun spots affect all Indian skin tones.

Alpha Arbutin

Brightening

Also known as: α-Arbutin, Arbutin

What it is
A glycosylated derivative of hydroquinone, extracted from bearberry. Inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme that triggers melanin, but does so gently and stably, without the risks associated with hydroquinone.
What it does
Fades hyperpigmentation, dark spots and PIH. Works best combined with Vitamin C or niacinamide for enhanced brightening.
Best for
All Indian skin types dealing with PIH, post-acne marks, sun spots and uneven tone. Safe even for sensitive skin.
Watch out
Generally very safe. Small precaution during pregnancy, avoid although topical absorption is minimal.
Indian products
Minimalist Alpha Arbutin 2% + Hyaluronic Acid (₹349), The Ordinary Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA (₹650 imported)
Myth busted Alpha arbutin is just a safer name for hydroquinone. It is structurally related but metabolises through a different pathway and has no meaningful risk profile.

Kojic Acid

Brightening

Also known as: Kojic dipalmitate, 5-Hydroxy-2-(hydroxymethyl)-4H-pyran-4-one

What it is
A by-product of fungi fermentation, also found naturally in sake and soy sauce. One of the most widely used brightening agents in Indian and Asian skincare. Inhibits tyrosinase.
What it does
Brightens skin, reduces hyperpigmentation and sun-induced dark spots, mild antimicrobial benefits for acne-related marks.
Best for
Indian skin with stubborn dark spots, tan lines and uneven tone. Works synergistically with niacinamide or alpha arbutin.
Watch out
Increases UV sensitivity, always use SPF. Some people experience contact dermatitis at higher concentrations. Always patch test.
Indian products
Mamaearth Kojic Acid Face Serum (₹399), Dot and Key Dark Spot Corrector with Kojic Acid (₹695)
Myth busted Kojic acid removes tan permanently. No depigmenting ingredient works without consistent SPF. Stop protecting from UV and pigmentation returns.

Tranexamic Acid

Brightening

Also known as: TXA, Trans-4-(aminomethyl)cyclohexanecarboxylic acid

What it is
Originally a prescription blood-clotting drug, now used topically at 2–5% for strong depigmenting effects. Works through multiple melanin pathways simultaneously, making it particularly effective on stubborn pigmentation.
What it does
Reduces melasma, PIH and general hyperpigmentation, especially persistent discolouration that has not responded to niacinamide alone.
Best for
Indian skin with melasma, hormonal pigmentation or deep stubborn PIH. Works well for both post-acne marks and sun damage.
Watch out
Limited data for pregnancy, skip during those periods. Generally very well tolerated by all skin types.
Indian products
Minimalist Tranexamic Acid 3% (₹399), The Derma Co Tranexamic Acid 3% Serum (₹499)
Myth busted Tranexamic acid is experimental. It has been used as a systemic drug in surgery and medicine for decades, the topical application is newer but the molecule is extremely well-studied.

Azelaic Acid

Brightening

Also known as: Nonanedioic Acid

What it is
A naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid found in grains. Uniquely anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial AND depigmenting, one of very few ingredients that treats acne and PIH simultaneously. OTC at 10%, prescription at 15–20%.
What it does
Reduces acne and rosacea-related inflammation, fades PIH, calms redness, mildly exfoliates, antimicrobial.
Best for
Indian skin dealing with acne and PIH at the same time, a very common combination. One of the few actives considered safe during pregnancy.
Watch out
Initial tingling is normal. Avoid strong exfoliants on the same day. Build tolerance slowly.
Indian products
Minimalist Azelaic Acid 10% (₹349), The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension 10% (₹750 imported)
Myth busted Azelaic acid is too mild to make a visible difference. At 10% it produces consistent, proven results for PIH and inflammatory acne, results take 8–12 weeks but are reliable.

Licorice Root Extract

Brightening

Also known as: Glycyrrhiza glabra, Glabridin

What it is
Extracted from the licorice plant and used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. The active compound glabridin inhibits tyrosinase and has established anti-inflammatory properties.
What it does
Reduces hyperpigmentation, calms inflammation, mild antioxidant properties, particularly effective on PIH and sun-induced discolouration.
Best for
Indian skin with PIH, uneven tone and mild inflammation. Works synergistically with niacinamide or Vitamin C.
Watch out
No significant contraindications at skincare concentrations.
Indian products
Kama Ayurveda Kumkumadi Brightening Face Oil (₹1,495) uses it in a traditional Ayurvedic combination.
Myth busted Licorice extract bleaches skin the way harsh agents do. It is a gentle melanin inhibitor, brightening without the risks of hydroquinone or mercury-based products.

Turmeric / Curcumin

Brightening

Also known as: Curcuma longa, Curcuminoids, Haldi

What it is
The active phenolic compound in turmeric, used in Indian households and Ayurveda for millennia. Among the most studied plant compounds in dermatology. Strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
What it does
Anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, mild brightening, antimicrobial, may help with PIH over time in formulations with optimised delivery.
Best for
Indian skin with inflammation-related pigmentation. Works well in stabilised formulations where curcumin bioavailability has been optimised.
Watch out
Raw kitchen turmeric applied topically causes yellow staining. Formulated products use optimised concentrations that avoid this.
Indian products
Mamaearth Ubtan Face Mask (₹349), Kama Ayurveda Turmeric and Myrrh Skin Brightening Cream (₹895)
Myth busted Applying kitchen turmeric paste is the same as using a formulated turmeric serum. Kitchen turmeric has poor skin penetration and causes staining. Formulated products use stabilised curcumin extracts with proper delivery systems.

Exfoliant

Chemical exfoliants that dissolve dead skin cells without scrubbing. AHA, BHA and PHA explained.

Salicylic Acid

Exfoliant

Also known as: BHA, Beta Hydroxy Acid, 2-Hydroxybenzoic Acid

What it is
An oil-soluble beta hydroxy acid derived from willow bark. Uniquely able to penetrate INTO pores and dissolve the sebum and dead skin causing blackheads and acne. AHAs work on the surface; salicylic acid works inside the pore.
What it does
Unclogs pores, dissolves blackheads and whiteheads, controls excess oil, reduces inflammatory acne, mildly anti-inflammatory.
Best for
Oily and acne-prone Indian skin. Most effective in India's humid weather where pores clog faster. Best for comedonal acne, blackheads and whiteheads.
Watch out
Dry or sensitive skin types, too stripping. Avoid during pregnancy. Do not use daily at 2%, 2-3 times a week is optimal.
Indian products
Minimalist Salicylic Acid 2% (₹299), The Derma Co 2% Salicylic Acid Serum (₹399)
Myth busted Higher salicylic acid concentration means better acne results. 2% is the effective ceiling, beyond that, irritation increases without improving results.

Glycolic Acid

Exfoliant

Also known as: AHA, Alpha Hydroxy Acid, 2-Hydroxyacetic Acid

What it is
The smallest AHA molecule, derived from sugarcane. Works on the skin surface by breaking the bonds holding dead skin cells together, revealing brighter skin underneath. Penetrates deepest of all AHAs due to its tiny molecular size.
What it does
Exfoliates dead skin, brightens dull complexion, reduces uneven texture, helps other actives absorb more effectively, mildly stimulates collagen.
Best for
Dry and normal Indian skin types dealing with dullness, sun damage or uneven texture. Particularly effective for brightening.
Watch out
Sensitive and very dry skin, can over-exfoliate. Always use SPF when using glycolic acid. Start at 5%, build to 10% slowly.
Indian products
Minimalist AHA 25% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution (₹449), Foxtale 10% Glycolic Acid Toner (₹549)
Myth busted AHA and BHA cannot be used in the same routine. Many effective products combine both. Start low and build tolerance gradually.

Lactic Acid

Exfoliant

Also known as: AHA, Milk Acid, 2-Hydroxypropanoic Acid

What it is
A larger AHA molecule than glycolic acid, found in fermented dairy. Penetrates more slowly making it gentler. Uniquely also functions as a natural moisturising factor, hydrates while exfoliating.
What it does
Gentle surface exfoliation, brightening, fades PIH, improves hydration alongside exfoliation.
Best for
Sensitive, dry and combination Indian skin. Best entry-point AHA for beginners. Well-suited to darker skin tones where stronger AHAs can occasionally cause post-inflammatory issues.
Watch out
Those with dairy allergies should patch test. Use SPF, all AHAs increase photosensitivity.
Indian products
Minimalist Lactic Acid 10% + Hyaluronic Acid (₹349), Plum 10% Lactic Acid Exfoliant (₹449)
Myth busted Lactic acid is too weak to be effective. For sensitive Indian skin, lactic acid is often the smarter choice, gentle consistent exfoliation produces better long-term results than aggressive irritation.

Mandelic Acid

Exfoliant

Also known as: AHA, Phenylglycolic Acid, Bitter Almond Acid

What it is
The largest and gentlest AHA molecule, derived from bitter almonds. Penetrates skin most slowly of all AHAs. Has mild antimicrobial properties that make it doubly useful for acne-prone skin.
What it does
Gentle exfoliation, mild brightening, antimicrobial for acne, improves skin texture with minimal irritation.
Best for
Darker Indian skin tones where more aggressive AHAs can trigger PIH. Also suited to skin that finds glycolic and lactic acid irritating.
Watch out
Still increases sun sensitivity, use SPF. Avoid alongside strong retinol use without building tolerance first.
Indian products
Minimalist Mandelic Acid 10% (₹349)
Myth busted Mandelic acid is only for very sensitive skin. It is beneficial for all skin types, darker Indian skin tones specifically benefit from its gentler approach to AHA exfoliation.

PHAs, Polyhydroxy Acids

Exfoliant

Also known as: Gluconolactone, Lactobionic Acid, PHA

What it is
Third-generation hydroxy acids with larger molecules than AHAs. Work exclusively at the skin surface, penetrating minimally. Uniquely also function as antioxidants and humectants while exfoliating, something AHAs do not do.
What it does
Extremely gentle surface exfoliation, antioxidant protection, mild hydration, brightening with almost zero irritation.
Best for
Rosacea-prone, eczema-prone or extremely sensitive Indian skin that cannot tolerate any other exfoliant. Also suitable for those new to chemical exfoliation.
Watch out
Less effective than AHAs for significant pigmentation or texture concerns. Use if AHAs consistently irritate.
Indian products
Minimalist PHA 3% (₹349)
Myth busted PHAs are too weak to be worth using. For skin that reacts to everything else, PHAs deliver consistent exfoliation with essentially no irritation, sometimes the gentlest tool is the right one.

Retinoid

Vitamin A derivatives, the gold standard for acne, anti-ageing and skin texture improvement.

Retinol

Retinoid

Also known as: Vitamin A, Retinoid, All-trans retinol

What it is
A Vitamin A derivative, the most studied OTC anti-ageing and acne ingredient in existence. Converts to retinoic acid in skin through a two-step process. Available OTC at 0.025–1%; prescription retinoids are stronger still.
What it does
Accelerates skin cell turnover, stimulates collagen and elastin production, treats acne, reduces fine lines, improves texture and pore appearance, fades PIH.
Best for
Any Indian skin type dealing with acne, early ageing signs, enlarged pores or uneven texture. Start at 0.025–0.1% and increase slowly over months.
Watch out
Absolute contraindication in pregnancy. Dry and sensitive skin must start extremely low. Never mix with AHAs, BHAs or strong Vitamin C in the same application. Always use SPF in the morning.
Indian products
Minimalist Retinol 0.3% (₹399), The Derma Co 0.1% Retinol Serum (₹499), RE'EQUIL Retin A Cream (₹550)
Myth busted Retinol permanently thins skin. It temporarily reduces the outer dead cell layer (which is desirable) but consistently thickens the dermis over time by stimulating collagen. The long-term effect is the opposite of thinning.

Retinal

Retinoid

Also known as: Retinaldehyde, Vitamin A aldehyde

What it is
One enzymatic step closer to retinoic acid than retinol, making it approximately 10–20x more potent at equivalent concentrations. Still available OTC. Also has direct antimicrobial activity against acne-causing bacteria.
What it does
All retinol benefits but faster and more pronouncedly. Anti-ageing, texture improvement, acne treatment, PIH fading, more effectively than retinol at the same percentage.
Best for
Indian skin that has already built retinol tolerance over several months and wants stronger results. Also excellent for acne combined with anti-ageing goals.
Watch out
Same cautions as retinol but more likely to cause irritation, introduce more gradually. No pregnancy, always use SPF.
Indian products
Minimalist Retinal 0.05% + Peptides (₹649), Geek and Gorgeous A-Game 0.1% Retinal (₹1,100)
Myth busted Retinal and retinol are just different spellings. Retinal is one chemical step closer to the active form retinoic acid, significantly more potent and faster-acting.

Bakuchiol

Retinoid

Also known as: Plant Retinol, Vegan Retinol, Psoralea corylifolia extract

What it is
A meroterpene extracted from babchi seeds, a plant used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. Activates similar genetic pathways to retinol through a completely different molecular mechanism. No structural similarity to Vitamin A.
What it does
Anti-ageing, texture improvement, mild brightening similar to retinol, with significantly less irritation and no photosensitivity increase.
Best for
Pregnant or breastfeeding Indian skin needing a retinol alternative. Sensitive skin that cannot tolerate retinol. Those who want retinol-like results without the peeling phase.
Watch out
Results are slower, expect 12–16 weeks vs 8–12 for retinol. Not a replacement for strong retinoid therapy in acne or advanced ageing.
Indian products
Plum Bright Years Bakuchiol Serum (₹799), Dot and Key Bakuchiol Youth Serum (₹895)
Myth busted Bakuchiol is just a marketing term for natural retinol. It works through a genuinely different biochemical mechanism, not Vitamin A, and has published peer-reviewed research behind it.

Hydration

Humectants, emollients and occlusives that maintain the skin moisture barrier.

Hyaluronic Acid

Hydration

Also known as: HA, Sodium Hyaluronate, Hyaluronan

What it is
A naturally occurring polysaccharide that holds up to 1,000x its weight in water. Found naturally in skin, eyes and joints. Sodium hyaluronate, the salt form, has a smaller molecule and penetrates skin more effectively.
What it does
Draws moisture into skin from the environment, temporarily plumps fine lines, hydrates all skin types without heaviness or greasiness.
Best for
All Indian skin types including oily skin. Oily skin is often dehydrated underneath, HA addresses this without adding oil.
Watch out
Apply to damp skin, not dry skin. In very dry AC environments, HA can pull moisture from deeper skin layers rather than the air, always follow with a moisturiser to seal it in.
Indian products
Minimalist Hyaluronic Acid 2% (₹299), The Derma Co HA Serum (₹349), Plum HA Water Drench Serum (₹475)
Myth busted Hyaluronic acid is a moisturiser. It is a humectant, it attracts water but does not lock it in. Without an emollient or occlusive on top, the drawn moisture evaporates. Layer a moisturiser over it.

Glycerin

Hydration

Also known as: Glycerol, 1,2,3-Propanetriol

What it is
One of the most extensively studied skincare ingredients. A humectant derived from plant oils. Inexpensive, universally effective and extraordinarily well tolerated. Present in virtually every moisturiser ever made.
What it does
Draws moisture to skin surface, reinforces the skin barrier, mild antimicrobial properties, keeps skin soft and supple.
Best for
All skin types. Particularly valuable in Indian winters and AC environments where dry air depletes skin moisture.
Watch out
At very high standalone concentrations in extremely dry conditions, can pull moisture from deeper skin. Always use in formulations or layer a moisturiser.
Indian products
Found in nearly every Indian moisturiser. CeraVe Moisturising Cream (₹999), Cetaphil Moisturising Cream (₹649)
Myth busted Glycerin is a cheap filler that brands use to pad ingredient lists. It is one of the most clinically validated humectants in dermatology, used in pharmaceutical formulations and wound care.

Ceramides

Hydration

Also known as: Ceramide NP, AP, EOP, Ceramide 1, 3, 6-II

What it is
Lipid molecules forming approximately 50% of the skin barrier. Produced naturally by skin but depleted by ageing, over-exfoliation, harsh cleansers and pollution. Topical ceramides replenish this barrier lipid matrix.
What it does
Restore and strengthen the skin barrier, reduce transepidermal water loss, calm inflammation and sensitivity, improve overall skin resilience after active ingredient use.
Best for
Dry, sensitive, eczema-prone or over-exfoliated Indian skin. Essential alongside retinol and AHA use to buffer irritation and maintain barrier health.
Watch out
No significant contraindications. Check label if you prefer vegan, some ceramides are animal-derived.
Indian products
CeraVe Moisturising Cream (₹999), CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser (₹799)
Myth busted Ceramides are just another name for regular moisturiser. Ceramides specifically repair the lipid matrix of the skin barrier, a mechanistically different action from simply adding water.

Squalane

Hydration

Also known as: Plant Squalane, Sugarcane Squalane

What it is
A stable, saturated derivative of squalene, a lipid naturally produced by human sebaceous glands. Derived from sugarcane or olives (never shark liver, check the source). Structurally identical to what skin already produces.
What it does
Deep moisturisation without pore clogging, antioxidant activity, stabilises other ingredients in formulations, regulates sebum production in oily skin.
Best for
All skin types including oily and acne-prone. Lightweight and non-comedogenic, one of the rare oils genuinely suitable for oily Indian skin in humid weather.
Watch out
Source matters ethically, look for plant-derived squalane specifically.
Indian products
Minimalist Squalane 100% (₹349), The Ordinary 100% Plant-Derived Squalane (₹700 imported)
Myth busted Oils always clog pores on oily skin. Squalane is non-comedogenic and structurally identical to what your skin already makes, it can actually reduce compensatory oil production.

Panthenol

Hydration

Also known as: Provitamin B5, Dexpanthenol, Pantothenic Acid

What it is
The alcohol form of Vitamin B5. Converts to pantothenic acid in skin, a component of coenzyme A critical to barrier function and wound healing. Clinically studied for both cosmetic and dermatological applications.
What it does
Intense hydration, accelerates wound healing and barrier repair, reduces inflammation from actives, soothes irritation and sunburn.
Best for
Irritated, sensitised or post-procedure Indian skin. Excellent buffer alongside retinol, AHAs or any ingredient causing irritation.
Watch out
No significant contraindications. Extraordinarily well tolerated.
Indian products
Minimalist Panthenol 5% Moisturiser (₹399)
Myth busted Panthenol is just a basic moisturiser with no special benefits. Multiple clinical studies demonstrate active wound healing acceleration and barrier repair, distinct from simple hydration.

Snail Mucin

Hydration

Also known as: Snail Secretion Filtrate, SSF, Snail Filtrate

What it is
Filtered secretion from Helix aspersa snails, popularised by Korean skincare. Contains hyaluronic acid, glycoprotein enzymes, antimicrobial peptides and growth factors, a genuinely multifunctional complex with decades of wound-healing research.
What it does
Deep hydration, wound healing, mild exfoliation from enzymes, anti-ageing growth factors, antimicrobial properties useful for active acne.
Best for
All skin types. Particularly good for acne-prone Indian skin dealing with active breakouts and healing scars simultaneously.
Watch out
Not suitable for strict vegans. Patch test for anyone with shellfish or snail allergies.
Indian products
COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence (₹1,200 imported, available on Nykaa)
Myth busted Snail mucin is a gimmick. It has clinical research on wound healing and collagen support going back decades, more evidence than many trendy ingredients.

Sun Protection

How SPF and PA ratings work, and what the numbers actually mean for Indian skin.

Zinc Oxide

Sun Protection

Also known as: Physical Sunscreen, Mineral Sunscreen, ZnO

What it is
A mineral UV filter that physically sits on skin and deflects both UVA and UVB rays simultaneously. Broad-spectrum in a single ingredient. Also anti-inflammatory and mildly antimicrobial, a genuine bonus for acne-prone skin.
What it does
Broad-spectrum UV protection, reduces skin inflammation, mild drying effect helpful for oily skin.
Best for
Sensitive, acne-prone Indian skin and those who react to chemical sunscreen filters. Recommended for children and pregnant women.
Watch out
Leaves white cast on medium-to-dark Indian skin tones. Nano zinc oxide reduces this but raises separate concerns. Look for tinted formulas for darker skin.
Indian products
Re'equil Sheer Zinc Oxide Sunscreen SPF 50 (₹549), Minimalist Zinc Oxide 1% SPF 30 (₹299)
Myth busted Mineral sunscreen is always safer and better than chemical sunscreen. Both are safe and effective. Chemical sunscreens are often more cosmetically elegant for darker Indian skin, less white cast, better formulas.

SPF & PA Rating System

Sun Protection

Also known as: Sun Protection Factor, PA Rating, UVA Protection

What it is
SPF measures protection against UVB rays (sunburn, skin cancer). PA rating (PA+, PA++, PA+++, PA++++) measures UVA protection, the rays causing ageing and pigmentation. The PA system originated in Japan and Korea and is widely used in Indian sunscreens.
What it does
SPF 50 blocks 98% of UVB at the correct dose of 2mg per cm². PA++++ provides the strongest UVA protection available OTC.
Best for
Indian skin requires minimum SPF 50 PA+++ due to high year-round UV index. PA++++ is strongly recommended given India's pigmentation concerns and UV intensity.
Watch out
Under-application is the primary failure point, SPF 50 at half the correct dose gives approximately SPF 7. The amount applied matters as much as the SPF number itself.
Indian products
The Derma Co Aqua Sunscreen SPF 50 PA+++ (₹399), Minimalist SPF 50 PA++++ (₹349), Foxtale Cover Up SPF 50 PA++++ (₹549). Read: Why your SPF 50 may only be giving you SPF 7 →
Myth busted SPF 100 is twice as protective as SPF 50. SPF 100 blocks 99% of UVB vs 98% for SPF 50, a 1% real-world difference. SPF does not scale linearly. Correct application amount delivers far more protection than a higher SPF number.

Antioxidant

Protect skin from pollution damage and UV-induced free radicals, essential in Indian cities.

Vitamin E

Antioxidant

Also known as: Tocopherol, Alpha-Tocopherol, Tocotrienol

What it is
A fat-soluble antioxidant naturally found in skin and sebum. Protects cell membranes from oxidative damage caused by UV, pollution and free radicals. Works synergistically with Vitamin C, each regenerates the other in a protective cycle.
What it does
Antioxidant protection from UV and pollution, moisturises, supports barrier function, accelerates wound healing, stabilises Vitamin C formulations.
Best for
Dry to normal Indian skin. Best used combined with Vitamin C for enhanced antioxidant protection, especially valuable in Indian cities with high pollution.
Watch out
Can be comedogenic at high standalone concentrations for oily, acne-prone skin. In balanced formulations this is rarely an issue.
Indian products
Most Indian Vitamin C serums include it. Minimalist Vitamin C 10% + E + Ferulic (₹499)
Myth busted Applying pure Vitamin E oil to scars removes them. The clinical evidence for topical Vitamin E oil on scars is mixed to negative. It is an antioxidant and barrier ingredient, not a scar treatment.

Ferulic Acid

Antioxidant

Also known as: 4-Hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamic Acid

What it is
A plant-based antioxidant found in the cell walls of fruits, vegetables and grains. In skincare, primarily used to stabilise Vitamin C and Vitamin E, doubling their antioxidant effectiveness and significantly extending their shelf life.
What it does
Potent antioxidant protection, stabilises and potentiates Vitamin C, mildly photoprotective, neutralises free radicals from pollution.
Best for
Anyone using Vitamin C serum, ferulic acid makes it work harder and last longer. Especially valuable in Indian cities with heavy pollution and UV exposure.
Watch out
No significant contraindications as a supporting ingredient.
Indian products
Minimalist Vitamin C + E + Ferulic Acid Serum (₹499) is the most accessible complete combination available in India.
Myth busted Ferulic acid is the same type of acid as glycolic or salicylic acid. Completely different chemistry and function, it is purely an antioxidant stabiliser, not an exfoliant.

Centella Asiatica

Antioxidant

Also known as: Cica, Gotu Kola, Tiger Grass, Madecassoside, Asiaticoside

What it is
An Ayurvedic herb used in Indian traditional medicine for centuries. Rich in triterpenoids, asiaticoside, madecassoside and asiatic acid, that reduce inflammation and support collagen synthesis. Well-established in clinical dermatology, not just skincare.
What it does
Reduces redness and inflammation, accelerates wound healing and barrier repair, supports collagen production, soothes sensitive and irritated skin.
Best for
Sensitive, irritated or post-active-treatment Indian skin. Excellent for calming after retinol or AHA use. Also useful for redness on Indian skin.
Watch out
No significant contraindications, one of the gentlest and most broadly tolerated ingredients.
Indian products
Multiple Himalaya products use Centella. Klairs Midnight Blue Calming Cream (₹1,600 imported) popular for sensitive Indian skin.
Myth busted Centella is just a trendy K-beauty ingredient with no real science. It has decades of peer-reviewed dermatological research on wound healing and inflammation, the K-beauty wave brought it mainstream but the science predates it.

Acne Treatment

Active ingredients that target acne-causing bacteria, clogged pores and inflammation.

Benzoyl Peroxide

Acne Treatment

Also known as: BPO, BP, Benzoyl peroxide 2.5%

What it is
An antimicrobial and keratolytic (skin-loosening) agent. One of the most effective OTC acne treatments available. Kills C. acnes bacteria by releasing oxygen into the follicle, bacteria cannot survive in an oxygen-rich environment. Critically, it does not cause antibiotic resistance.
What it does
Kills acne-causing bacteria, unclogs pores, reduces inflammatory acne, particularly red pustules and papules.
Best for
Inflammatory acne on Indian skin. Works where salicylic acid alone is insufficient. Start at 2.5%.
Watch out
Bleaches fabric, pillowcases, towels and clothing will be lightened. Very drying, use a moisturiser consistently. Start at 2.5%, not 10%.
Indian products
Benzac AC 2.5% Gel (₹150–₹200, requires prescription). Proactiv also available in India.
Myth busted Higher benzoyl peroxide concentration means faster acne clearing. 2.5% is as effective as 10% for killing bacteria with significantly less irritation. Always start at the lowest effective concentration.

Tea Tree Oil

Acne Treatment

Also known as: Melaleuca alternifolia oil, TTO

What it is
An essential oil from Australian Melaleuca alternifolia leaves. Contains terpinen-4-ol with proven antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. One of the most researched plant-based acne treatments.
What it does
Mild antimicrobial action against acne-causing bacteria, reduces pimple inflammation, useful as a spot treatment for mild breakouts.
Best for
Mild acne on Indian skin as a gentler alternative to benzoyl peroxide. Effective spot treatment.
Watch out
Never apply undiluted, causes chemical burns. Must be diluted to 5% in a carrier product. Keep away from eyes.
Indian products
Wow Skin Science Tea Tree Face Wash (₹299), The Body Shop Tea Tree line
Myth busted More tea tree oil equals more acne-fighting power. Undiluted tea tree causes severe irritation and burns. The clinically studied concentration is 5%, more causes damage, not better results.

Neem Extract

Acne Treatment

Also known as: Azadirachta indica, Neem Oil, Nimbidin

What it is
Derived from the neem tree native to India, used in Ayurveda for millennia. Contains nimbidin, nimbin and azadirachtin: antimicrobial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory compounds backed by published research.
What it does
Antimicrobial action against acne bacteria, anti-inflammatory, reduces blackheads, mild astringent to control oiliness.
Best for
Oily, acne-prone Indian skin. One of the most culturally and clinically relevant ingredients for Indian skincare, with genuine science to back its traditional use.
Watch out
Neem oil at high concentrations can be comedogenic. Better as a formulated ingredient than as a pure oil on the face.
Indian products
Himalaya Neem Face Wash (₹99), Biotique Bio Neem Purifying Face Wash (₹140)
Myth busted Neem is just an Ayurvedic remedy without real scientific backing. Substantial peer-reviewed research exists on neem's antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, the evidence base is genuine.

Anti-Ageing

Ingredients that stimulate collagen and reduce visible signs of skin ageing.

Peptides

Anti-Ageing

Also known as: Signal Peptides, Matrikines, Carrier Peptides, Palmitoyl Tripeptide

What it is
Short amino acid chains that signal skin cells to produce more collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. Different peptides target different functions, some signal collagen production, some inhibit muscle movement, some carry minerals to skin.
What it does
Stimulate collagen and elastin production, improve firmness and skin elasticity, reduce fine lines with consistent long-term use.
Best for
Indian skin showing early ageing signs, typically 30s and above. Excellent combined with retinol or as a pregnancy-safe alternative to retinoids.
Watch out
Peptides are fragile, AHAs in the same step can degrade them. Apply before moisturiser.
Indian products
Minimalist Multi-Peptide Serum (₹499), The Ordinary Buffet (₹1,450 imported)
Myth busted Topical collagen moisturisers rebuild skin's collagen. Collagen molecules are too large to penetrate skin. Peptides work because they signal production from within, collagen applied topically cannot.

Retinyl Palmitate

Anti-Ageing

Also known as: Vitamin A Palmitate, Retinyl Esters

What it is
The mildest Vitamin A form, an ester requiring multiple conversion steps to become active retinoic acid. Significantly gentler than retinol with slower and milder results.
What it does
Very mild Vitamin A activity, gentle anti-ageing, gradual texture improvement, introductory retinoid benefits.
Best for
Retinoid beginners on sensitive Indian skin wanting to ease into Vitamin A gradually.
Watch out
Not effective enough for serious acne or advanced ageing concerns, consider it a starter retinoid only.
Indian products
Present in several Indian moisturisers and sunscreens as an add-on ingredient.
Myth busted Retinyl palmitate is just as effective as retinol at the same concentration. It requires more conversion steps and delivers significantly milder results.

Frequently Asked Questions About Skincare Ingredients

Common ingredient questions answered for Indian skin, Indian weather and Indian products.

What is niacinamide and what does it do for Indian skin?

Niacinamide is Vitamin B3, a water-soluble active that controls oil, fades dark spots and PIH, minimises pores and strengthens the skin barrier. At 5–10%, it is one of the best all-round ingredients for Indian skin because it addresses oil control and pigmentation simultaneously without irritation.

Can I use retinol on Indian skin?

Yes, retinol is safe and effective for Indian skin at the right concentration. Start at 0.025–0.1% and increase slowly. Always use SPF the next morning. Avoid during pregnancy. Give it 8–12 weeks for visible results.

What is the difference between AHA and BHA for Indian skin?

AHAs (glycolic acid, lactic acid, mandelic acid) are water-soluble and work on the skin surface, best for dullness, uneven texture and PIH. BHAs (salicylic acid) are oil-soluble and penetrate into pores, best for acne and blackheads on oily Indian skin. Many products combine both.

Is hyaluronic acid good for oily skin in Indian humidity?

Yes. Hyaluronic acid is a lightweight humectant that adds water to skin without adding oil. Oily skin is often dehydrated beneath the surface, HA addresses this without heaviness. Apply to damp skin and seal with a light moisturiser.

Which ingredients help with pigmentation and dark spots on Indian skin?

The most effective ingredients for PIH and dark spots on Indian skin are niacinamide (5–10%), alpha arbutin (2%), tranexamic acid (3%), Vitamin C (10–20%), azelaic acid (10%) and kojic acid. Using SPF 50 PA++++ daily is equally critical, UV exposure drives and worsens all forms of pigmentation.

Which sunscreen is best for Indian skin tones?

Medium-to-dark Indian skin tones often struggle with the white cast from zinc oxide mineral sunscreens. Chemical sunscreens using Tinosorb, avobenzone or octinoxate are cosmetically superior for darker skin. Look for SPF 50 PA++++ minimum. The Derma Co, Minimalist and Foxtale make lightweight options formulated specifically for Indian skin.

What skincare ingredients should I avoid mixing?

Do not use retinol on the same evening as AHAs or BHAs, both increase skin turnover and the combination causes irritation. Vitamin C (L-Ascorbic Acid) loses effectiveness at high pH, do not mix with alkaline products. Benzoyl peroxide can deactivate retinol, alternate them on different nights.

What is the best ingredient for hair fall in India?

For dandruff-triggered hair fall (the most common type in India), look for ketoconazole or zinc pyrithione in shampoos. For nutritional causes, get ferritin, B12, Vitamin D and thyroid levels checked. For pattern hair loss, minoxidil (2–5%) is the most evidence-backed OTC option. Redensyl and Anagain are newer actives with promising results.

Which skincare ingredients are safe during pregnancy in India?

Safe during pregnancy: hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramides, niacinamide, azelaic acid, bakuchiol, lactic acid, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, SPF (zinc oxide preferred). Avoid during pregnancy: retinol, retinal, salicylic acid (at high concentrations), benzoyl peroxide (precautionary), and all prescription retinoids.

Is niacinamide and Vitamin C a bad combination?

No. This warning is based on a 1960s study using pure nicotinic acid in lab conditions, not the niacinamide and Vitamin C concentrations found in modern skincare. At typical concentrations (5–15%), the two work well layered or combined in a single product. Multiple brands formulate them together without issue.
